Q: According to your many years architectural design experience, what do you think is the most important job in the earliest stage of concept design for a project?

A: The most exciting ideas often come from unexpected places – as designers, we need to be able to put aside one design, and come up with something completely different… and another… and another. It’s that iteration at the early stages that ensures a design looks fresh and feels inspirational. Sometimes the first concept is the right answer – but more often than not, coming at it from various directions will produce the best ideas.

Q: In your opinion, what are the basic elements for the design of high-rise residential buildings? Some people regard the green ecological high-rise residential buildings as the high-end expensive ones, do you agree with it? Why?

A: This question is very much dependent on culture. Different parts of the world have very different attitudes to high-rise buildings. But generally, orientation in terms of good views and solar gain and efficient planning of the core and good public spaces and landscape design are common elements to consider. A higher initial budget should allow a building to make savings throughout its life, incorporating environmentally sustainable measures such as materials from renewable sources, those with lower embedded energy, recycled materials and locally sourced materials. It will mean buildings can be designed to be more air tight, better insulated, and have energy saving devices and water control mechanisms, and even generate their own power through the use of solar panels or wind generation.

Q: Where does your inspiration come from during your long-time architectural designing experience?

A: Collaboration is the key, good design doesn’t happen in isolation – inviting another person to look at your ideas and offer alternatives is vital for exploring concepts. We are fortunate at WATG to have great designers from all over the world – working with people who have such a wide range of experiences is truly inspirational. We are also fortunate that we have a great crop of young designers. They are amazingly talented, trained in many aspects of design and technology – and bursting with ideas. Moreover, we mustn’t forget where our work comes from – a reliable and trustworthy client’s relationship is indispensable when it comes to collaboration on a project.

Q: As a female architect, what do you think is the greatest challenge at work? While what advantages you will take from the specific sensitivity and aesthetic view of female at work?

A: This is a difficult question to answer, since I don’t have experience of being anything other than a female architect! Half of WATG’s staff are women, so we tend to spend our time thinking more about other challenges – finding the most promising project opportunities, the best clients, the most exciting designs…

Q: The design of resort developments will always bring happiness to the future leisure consumers. Well, do you yourself get some happiness from these projects? Any interesting stories could share with us?

A: What is particularly enjoyable is the thought that some of our projects set the stage for a “once-in-a-lifetime” memory for someone, for their dream holiday or honeymoon. I remember once I visited one of our projects that had been recently completed, the Lake Resort in Algarve, Portugal. I was there with the photographer, who was carrying out the publicity photography. We were walking in the grounds talking about shots to set up for the next day – he didn’t even have his professional camera with him - when a couple came up to us asking if we would take their photo on their camera. It was the last day of their honeymoon and they wanted a picture of themselves with the romantic façade of the hotel as a backdrop. The photographer duly obliged, and I’m sure it was a great photo – but the couple had no idea that I was the architect of the hotel and that he was a professional photographer!
