Q: What was the client’s / instructor’s requirement for this project?
A: The project, The Contemporary Buddhist Temple, is a thesis which in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Architecture, Assumption University 2011. The project was proposed by the attention to work on a type of the project that have deep-rootedness and have been discussed for the design principles in this time to crystallize the idea that has been developed from various aspects of design while studying in architecture faculty.
Q: Kindly describe the conceptual basis of the project.
A: To communicate the Buddhist main idea to the contemporary people, the project respond to culture assimilation, perception toward nature which is separated with the city and science learning instead of cultivation by “the journey to truth” which is able to be learnt, experienced and discovered through the design. Based on the main purpose of Buddhism, to get rid of suffering by morality, consciousness and wisdom (to see the truth), “the journey to the truth” is provided in sequences in the site which are entering nature, concentrating on inner journey and seeing the truth through peaceful mind.
Q: What materials are used in this project, why and where?
A: In this project, a main structure is used by steel and finished with wood. There are many advantages using steel construction. Firstly, to be able to build the envelope of the Dhamma pavilion that has various sizes of lengths and degrees of angles. Secondly, steel is able to be attached with wood which provide a natural sense blending the design to surrounding embedded by trees.
Q: Please elaborate on the various spaces, their functions and the space planning involved.
A: There is a relatedness between existing site, site planning and architectural space. The site is separated into three zones which are community, spiritual and dwelling area. Architectural designs and landscapes respond to specific purpose and function of each zone. Firstly, the large space with architecture grouped are created for community area providing office, reception, almshouse and museum to motivate people to come and learn. Secondly, one huge space after the long path in spiritual area is provided for congregation for religious rite. Lastly, small units are inserted into the forest for more privacy in dwelling area.
