Just completed is a 200 meter long pair of buildings snaking west to east in a series of brightly colored streaks that cheer up the often grey skies of Vienna’s Prater district. They fold out to form a series of roof decks; they zig in and out to create “sunshine corners” and are occasionally eaten out to create balconies for smokers or others who are needing a break. There are routes under that run from the University courtyard to the Prater Park on the south - diving through the red base.

The building is designed around Cook and Robotham’s strongly held belief (based on many years as University teachers) that a lively and successful college building should have generous and engaging internal spaces that are not just seminar rooms or offices, but places to “hang out” and possibly encourage you to stay around after class: so these are carved out of the interior and slither around in a similar way to the building as a whole.

Draped over the exterior is a layer of natural timber louvres that partially deal with sun shading and respond to the woodlands that surround the campus – also acting as staccato foil to the striation of the buildings as a whole. Some observers have referred to these as a type of “designer stubble” that male Academics and upwardly mobile young lawyers enjoy.

The total profile is deliberately inspired by landscape formation (that over time will be infested with vegetation) and by the desire to encourage animation on the decks and all available surfaces. CRAB STUDIO has also incorporated “capsules of quiet” in the library, “sound clouds” in the seminar rooms with their own undulating mannerisms for chairs and key items of furniture.

Company Profile:
CRAB is the Cook Robotham Architectural Bureau set up in 2006 by Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham who had designed (respectively) the Kunsthaus Graz and the interiors of the Magna Centre in Rotherham. CRAB has now won competitions for theatres, exhibitions and university buildings and their recently completed Abedian School of Architecture for Bond University in Australia has been awarded “State Public Building of the Year” medal and is in the shortlist as Australian National Building of the Year. Their recently completed Law Faculty and Administration buildings in Vienna has received an RIBA “European Building” award.
They have constructed public housing in Berlin and Madrid and are currently in the advanced stages of design of a studio building for the Arts University Bournemouth whilst also engaged in a series of feasibility studies and further exhibition buildings. Hundreds of items from their “CRAB” range of tables and educational furniture have now been produced. With a much-documented trajectory of experimental projects and an ongoing plethora of published works, CRAB is now demonstrating the application of their much-discussed design ideas on the ground.

Professor Sir Peter Cook
Professor Sir Peter Cook RA, founder of Archigram, former Director the Institute for Contemporary Art, London (the ICA) and Bartlett School of Architecture at University College, London has been a pivotal figure within the global architectural world for over half a century. His ongoing contribution to architectural innovation was recognized via the conferral of an honorary doctorate in April 2010 by the Lund University, Sweden. Peter’s achievements with radical experimentalist group Archigram have been the subject of numerous publications and public exhibitions and were recognized by the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2002, when members of the group were awarded the RIBA’s highest award, the Royal Gold Medal.
In 2007, Peter was knighted by the Queen for his services to architecture. He is also a Royal Academician and a Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic. Peter is currently a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art, London. His professor-ships include those of the Royal Academy, University College London and the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste (Staedelschule) in Frankfurt-Main, Germany.
Peter has from the very beginning made waves in architectural circles, however, it is in the last few years that the construction of his Art Museum in Graz, Austria (the Kunsthaus) has brought his work to a wider public, a process continuing with the recent completion of the Vienna Business and Economics University’s new Departments of Law and Central Administration Buildings and Bond University in Australia’s new Abedian School of Architecture. Peter has also built in Osaka, Nagoya, Berlin, Frankfurt and Madrid. Peter’s continuing work as a lecturer of considerable renown makes him a familiar voice within cultural institutions around the world, where many have enjoyed an opportunity to hear Peter expound (among other subjects) upon his love affair with the slithering, the swarming and the spooky.
