The new Shanghai Natural History Museum is located at the Sculpture Park in Jing’An District. The Perkins+Will designed museum is comprised of three levels above grade and two levels below grade. Overall, volumetrically two thirds of the museum is below grade. The museum rises up as a spiraling landscaped plane surrounding an oval pond, its shape recalling the harmonious forms and proportions of a nautilus shell, one of the purest geometric forms found in nature. Within this spiraling plane is an oval courtyard containing a stepped garden comprised of rock formations and water in the tradition of the ‘Mountain Water Garden’. The courtyard provides stunning views and serves as the main orientation focus for visitors inside the building. The ‘living’ east wall is vegetated to symbolize the forests. The north wall is made of stone to suggest shifting tectonic plates as well as canyon walls eroded by rivers. The façade where the main entrance resides is fully glazed to create a visual connection with the outside. The façade within the building’s spiral, referred to as the ‘cell wall’, is comprised of a curtain-wall layer, a structural layer and a sun-screen layer.

A series of sustainable strategies are incorporated by Perkins+Will in the building design. A all-encompassing green roof is used for rainwater collection and reuse. Water features provide evaporative cooling for the outdoor courtyard gardens while geothermal systems are used extensively for building heating and cooling. Passive and active sun-shading methods are employed throughout and high-performance glazing is used to maximize energy efficiency. Fly-ash mix is incorporated into the structural concrete as a sustainable feature. Solar panels, photovoltaics, skylights, high efficiency light fixtures and low-flow toilets are also incorporated. Automatically operable windows are used to natural ventilate and flush the building during nighttime. The natural history museum is a bioclimatic building showcasing achievements in nature sciences and presenting the story of nature and the museum itself. The museum has achieved China Green 3-Star certification, and will undergo full post-occupancy performance evaluation and metering.
