Studio Echelman was commissioned to create a permanent sculptural icon for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation campus headquarters in Seattle. “Impatient Optimist” was conceived as a visual expression of the spirit of the foundation’s work and mission. The voluminous form is composed of ultra-lightweight fibers that create an ephemeral presence in the Seattle sky.

The artwork is Echelman’s most delicately complex sculptural form yet, suspended between two buildings on the campus. She utilized a new custom-designed software tool by Autodesk that allows her studio to drape netted forms and view the effects of gravity and wind force. With the help of this immediate virtual feedback, they are pushing their designs further and exploring new possibilities of complexity.

Studio Echelman has been adjusting and refining their designs for nearly two years. In October 2013 they installed a temporary prototype and conducted tests of lighting, transparency, and scale. Currently Echelman and team are working to complete the final design and fabrication of the permanent piece for installation on the campus in 2014.

During the day, the sculpture’s subtle combination of hues plays with the changing Seattle sky, transforming the viewer’s impression of the sculpture. At night, a custom lighting program bridges a connection between the foundation’s Seattle campus and its regional offices. The gradually transmuting colors are chosen to correspond to sunrise at its regional offices throughout the globe in real time, animating the space with color and enlivening the campus heart.
