Project Summary
Granpark Tamachi is an urban park located in the dense Tamachi District of Tokyo, Japan. This project creates a distinct sense of place for a difficult site linking the developments’ office tower, apartment tower, and mid-rise commercial building to the existing neighborhood, providing an amenity and social gathering space that was severely lacking previously.

Project Description
Granpark Tamachi is a 1.1 hectare public urban park located in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan. The client, NTT Urban Development Corporation, agreed to fund the design and construction of the park and then donate it to the city, in exchange for additional floor area allowances in the redevelopment of its 35 story office tower, 5 story commercial building, and 28 story apartment building located on site. The objectives of this project were to create a neighborhood park, in a high density urban area with little existing public open space, capable of accommodating the needs of large numbers of office workers during the week and the recreational needs of residents in the evenings and on weekends.

Keikan Sekkei collaborated with Zion Breen Associates of New Jersey during the preliminary planning of the park to produce a vision that integrated both traditional and contemporary Japanese design philosophies with contemporary American design aesthetics and urban park design, resulting in a unique park space for a previously underserved neighborhood. One unique feature of the park is that it is constructed on structure, above a grocery store, restaurant, and parking facility. The park design provides significant environmental benefits over the previous impervious plaza by providing a green roof with planting islands and tree canopy, which intercept and detain stormwater allowing a degree of infiltration, as well as providing a reduction in the heat island effect and sun glare from the surrounding buildings. A central feature of the park is a glass enclosed restaurant with an outdoor dining terrace overlooking a fountain designed to screen the sounds of nearby traffic. The majority of the plant material chosen is native to Japan with the few exceptions being plants tolerant of stressful urban environments and utilized for specific difficult situations.

Granpark Tamachi, serves the needs of a diverse user group providing amenity for the project and surrounding neighborhood, being recognized in 2006 for its contribution to the urban environment and receiving an award for environmental design excellence from Yomiuri, a national newspaper.

Plant Palette
The planting design of the plaza is composed of groves of tall trees and flowering shrubs which provide seasonal color (Malus seiboldii, Prunus edoensis, Styrax japonica, Cornus kousa, Magnolia denudata, Magnolia liliflora, Zelkova serrata, Camellia japonica, Ilex integra and Quercus myrsinaefolia etc). A massing of evergreen trees and shrubs screens traffic and buffers noise from the roadway and bridge to the west.
