Teikyo Heisei university Nakano campus is located at the corner of extensive site which was used as police school once. This campus is not composed of several buildings, but it is put into one huge building. Furthermore, in the building, classrooms and laboratories are not only, but gymnasiums are also included. Walking toward this campus from the station, there is the open space combined main entrance of this campus with approximately 30 meters in width. At the same time this space is the place to allow students to pass their time practically, it is also the access-free place to neighborhood as the public space integrated with neighboring park. Some giant zelkova trees, which had existed in this site from old days, are remained there as they are; others are transplanted after the construction of this campus again.

About the basic thought of landscape design, to begin with, we tried to consider comprehensively all the 1st floor of building included this open space as the public/semi-public space. First, we cover a surface of both interior and exterior floor with black pavement, and then spread the square-shaped graphic pattern here and there, such as sunshine filtering through foliage. This pavement pattern serves as the signage which shows where to stay in this campus. The pavement patterns are set to various kinds of floor level by each pattern unit, and we intend that the difference of level causes a variety of uses. In other words, the space of pavement with no pattern is mainly offered to pedestrian circulation.

The pavement patterns are installed everywhere around the site, but the main part of them is located in front plaza. The front plaza by pavement pattern consisting of three materials (black and white granite stone, wood deck) is prepared by various kinds of level and size every unit, and will be the place to fit for the uses of wide range of parties (from only person to some group). Under some giant zelkova trees offering pleasant leafy shade, the outdoor spaces creating a variety of activity space —chatting, having meal, resting, etc.—connects between university and neighboring park. The manner of those who taking their ease happily like that is the main scene of this campus.

Company Profile
“studio on site” has established in 1998 with four partners. The name has derived from our thought that everything occurred on the site and our mission is to make things happens through our design. Although our work covers a wide range, we always emphasize the “experience of a place” and consider how a given activity will come to be positioned in society and on the specific site. We believe that landscape design is not due to the structure of the new form but a given activity always has something to do with the change in shape or appearance of what is already on the site. We follow this line of thought on every single project, too, encouraging all of our team to always consider in their daily works what they hope a given action will make happen and what experience can be achieved only in that particular place.
