索诺马州立大学格林音乐中心是世界级的表演艺术殿堂,韦尔草坪音乐演奏区及其公共空间将为该中心举办各类户外演出活动提供一系列理想的表演场地。SWA设计团队全面负责该项目的总体规划和景观设计。项目总体规划方案呈现出简约的户外空间格局,且层次分明,富有动态视觉效果,并将项目中各景观元素进行合理化统筹,科学布局场地人流疏散系统,在各表演场地与毗邻的校内道路设施间设置了相应的缓冲区。
 
韦尔草坪演奏区一期工程是美国西海岸地区首个专门为交响乐团和其他各类高品质音乐会开辟的大型户外声乐演奏场所。建筑师威廉·罗恩设计的琼与桑福德·韦尔户外音乐厅于2012年9月正式对外开放,拥有1 400个座位,在视野开阔的草坪区映衬中,尽显音乐与自然交融的奇妙魅力,该音乐厅被公认为是世界上最为精湛的声乐演奏场地之一。当主演奏区的背景幕缓缓拉开,拥有一系列绿化阶梯平台的韦尔草坪区瞬间映入眼帘,这里可同时容纳5 000人就坐,另外还有1 600个阶梯平台座位可供落座。原定2015年竣工的韦尔公共空间区域,其设计将形成一个非正式的露天剧场,为主体草坪演奏区提供了有力的空间补给。
 
项目之初,校方希望将韦尔草坪演奏区建造成可举办除音乐演奏会以外的各类户外活动的高度灵活性多功能户外场地。这便需要设计团队构思出更为综合化的空间设计方案,将系列绿化阶梯平台进行合理化纵横空间分隔,以形成相应的就餐区、野餐区、便携式座椅区以及草坪落座区。设计中还构建了若干非正式活动区,包括:为各类派对和集会设置的绿化空间、艺术幕墙入口广场、雕塑长廊、服务性站点和卫生间设施等等。
 
在计划营建该项目之前,校方已施行相应的挖掘并储备了大量的本地土壤材料,原先计划用于校内其它的项目建设。景观设计师们充分利用了这批土壤材料,用于铺筑演奏区域的听觉缓冲区小平台。这些小平台的设置更加便于人们抵达阶梯平台座椅区,营造出优质的视听效果,并与全新的大型公共空间形成无缝对接。由于严格的预算控制,设计团队向校方提交了详细的成本估算信息,以协助校方对项目中各设施的资金分布情况有更为清晰的了解。
 
草坪区的北面是橡树环抱的索诺马山脉,山中水源正是圣罗莎小湖的水源源头;其南面与科普兰溪相连,这样优质的地理环境为校园提供了理想的自然排水系统。设计师们从这些自然美景中汲取了充分的设计灵感。阶梯平台座椅区和相应的功能区域既朝向主演奏台,也面向远处连绵的山景,人们在聆听优雅音乐的同时,亦可静赏周边迷人的自然风光。项目场地上还设置了一定数量的蓄水池,以便有效收集雨水并对其进行相应的净化处理。听觉缓冲区小平台沿边种植着成排的红杉,在视觉上围合出整个庞大的草坪阶梯平台座椅区空间。本土落叶橡树和各式林地草种的种植,为这一户外演奏圣殿营造出多样化的景观空间视觉体验;此外,滨水区植栽也大大增强了科普兰溪栖息地的生态价值。对于非SWA设计的主入口广场空间,SWA设计团队也进行了相应的绿化处理,将加州北部橄榄果树林中废弃的大量百年老橄榄树回收并移植于此,点缀原先空旷的入口区域。
 
大胆的构思、极富视觉表现力的阶梯平台座椅区以及大量的绿化植栽共同构筑出这一系列户外空间的理想布局与设计。听觉缓冲区小平台的构建将噪音有效隔绝在演奏区外,形成理想的视听环境,同时,大量的步道系统设置,为整个演奏区提供了便利的人流疏散系统。红杉树和本土橡树的种植,构成了索诺马山远景的观景视角。正如索诺马州州长鲁本·阿尔米那所评价的那样:该项目将大学校园景观与艺术演绎场所景观和谐、自然地融于一体,既蕴含学术氛围,又充满艺术气息。

Weill Lawn and Commons provide outdoor performance venues at Green Music Center, a world-class performing arts complex at Sonoma State University. SWA prepared overall master planning and landscape architectural design. A simple, dramatic grading plan unifies project elements, directs circulation, and buffers concert venues from adjacent roadway traffic. 
 
The Phase I Weill Lawn is the first acoustically protected outdoor venue on the West Coast for symphony orchestra and other highly polished musical performances. The lawn complements architect William Rawn's design for the 1,400-seat Joan and Sanford I. Weill Concert Hall, which opened in September 2012 and is generally considered one of the world's most acoustically superb concert venues. When the pavilion's back wall is opened, Weill Lawn expands its interior capacity with a series of lawn terraces that accommodate up to 5,000 visitors in chairs or 1,600 seated at tables. Scheduled for completion in 2015, Weill Commons is designed to provide a more informal amphitheater along with an open air pavilion for major gatherings.
 
The University requested broad flexibility for staging a wide variety of events at Weill Lawn. This called for a flexible design, with careful horizontal and vertical spacing of terraces to accommodate table seating for diners, picnicking, portable chairs, and lawn seating. The design also creates a number of informal spaces, including garden rooms for parties and gatherings, an entry plaza with an art wall, a sculpture promenade, and concession and restroom facilities.
 
Prior to the project, the University had stockpiled expansive native soils excavated as part of other building projects. The landscape architects recycled this supply by sculpting them into berms that were carefully measured and located to provide acoustic buffers. The resulting design provides access to seating areas by uniting circulation with grading, resulting in graceful paths that meet ADA requirements and appear seamless with the new landforms. With serious budget constraints, the team also provided detailed cost estimation information in order to assist the University with clear and realistic fundraising information for the facility. 
 
The surrounding, oak-studded Sonoma Mountains frame northerly views from the site and provide the headwaters of the Laguna de Santa Rosa. To the south, Copeland Creek borders the site and provides the natural drainage for the campus. The designers drew inspiration from these features. Seating and use areas are oriented toward distant views of the hills as well as the performance spaces. Onsite detention ponds capture and treat storm water. Redwood groves follow the berms, framing gathering areas and creating a sense of enclosure. Deciduous native oaks and woodland species create variety and interest within interior gardens, while a riparian palette fosters habitat values along Copeland Creek. For the entry courtyard (designed by others), SWA oversaw the transplanting of 100-year old olives that were being recycled out of use at a northern California olive orchard.
 
The design of these venues shows the importance of bold, expressive grading and planting. Berms create enclosure and buffer noise, while sweeping pathways provide gracious entries and accessibility. Redwood groves and native oaks frame views to the Sonoma hills. The result, as stated by Sonoma State President Ruben Armiñana, puts the university at the hub of an artistic network serving both the academic world and the larger community.
