Project Description
The Canadian Firefighters Memorial is a new commemorative park that honours the service of fallen firefighters, creates an intimate space for daily and personal reflection, and provides a new home for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation's Annual Memorial Ceremony on Ottawa's LeBreton Flats. Located at the site of the capital's devastating fire of 1900, this urban-planning memorial ensemble was with winning submission in a two-stage, national competition hosted by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) and the National Capital Commission (NCC) in 2010.

A designated landmark memorial site, the project is located on Ottawa's LeBreton Flats, along the National Capital Commission's Ceremonial Route and opposite the Canadian War Museum. Elements of the project were carefully composed on the site to maintain unobstructed views of Ottawa's Parliament Buildings, as well as views towards the backdrop of the Ottawa skyline. The site also acts as a community park to serve the adjacent condominiums, while respecting and complementing the landscape character of the existing adjacent gorge and Flint Street Pumping Station. The site is accessible from Wellington Street and Lett Street, and is bordered by the Ottawa River pathway.

As a mis-en-scéne of"characters"the project's design is organized with a 2½-times life-size bronze Firefighter statue, 60-foot Firepole, Lone Pine Rock with Dedication Pine Tree, sloped Sugar Maple grove, and granite Memorial Wall with engraved with the names of fallen firefighters. A series of smaller, more intimate areas were designed to foster introspection, including a Sitting Nook and Reflection Garden. Together, these carefully composed elements tell the story of remembrance, safety, and protection, while reflecting Canada's identity. We selected plantings that could change and grow with the seasons, including Canadian plants recognized for their hardiness, colour, and form. Every inch of stone and bronze, and every plant was carefully selected from, or crafted in, local communities across Canada — from the bronze foundry in Edmonton and the stone suppliers in Québec and Ontario, to the metal fabricators in Toronto and stonemasons in Ottawa. The new Grove comprises sugar maple trees set amongst dense plantings of seasonally changing shrubs and perennials that achieve full vibrancy in the fall months, creating a thick red carpet of foliage.

The Memorial Wall frames the interior of the memorial space with its precise design elements of specialty stone finishing, bronze flags, and light fixtures—each coming together to mark the edge of the stone panels. The sloped form facing Wellington Street provides streetscape continuity with a series of oak trees and a densely planted edge condition. The wall and the planting provide noise buffering of the street for the interior park, while the overall site minimizes stormwater runoff through the use of permeable surface materials and by maximizing planted areas. Lighting along the Memorial wall, at the entrance paths, and in the reflection garden were also designed to prolong safe use of the park into the evening hours.

This project embodies our nation's heritage and landscape through its iconography, design, and visual representation. The Canadian Firefighters Memorial was completed in the summer of 2012 and was inaugurated in September of that year. Since its unveiling, the project has been formally integrated into both Ottawa's Firefighter Memorial Service Route and the National Capital Commission's Ceremonial Route, which leads to the Parliament Building
