The Laurent-Perrier Garden

This garden is formed from a series of defined layers, and continues Luciano’s ongoing interest in texture, form and light. The cool, contemplative design shows the interplay of natural elements with a simple geometric layout. The intention is to stimulate the enjoyment of observation, and to invite exploration of stillness and movement through relationships between the contrasting forms and materials in the garden.
The planting features delicate forms alongside stronger, bolder leaves; the walls combine lustres and materials; the stone surfaces are executed with contrasting finishes; the flow and reflection of water gives light and animation. Ursula von Rydingsvard’s timeless forms, constructed in roughly hewn layers of cedar, contribute to the exploration of composition and texture.

The Mind's Eye

This garden has been created for theRNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) in partnership with Countryside. The mind’s eye is the human ability to create images or scenes without the need for sight. This garden is designed to stimulate the mind’s eye through a series of contrasting sensory experiences.
Designed as a sensory garden for blind and partially sighted people, as well as those with sight, the space challenges the fully sighted viewer by sometimes blurring or distorting the image we expect to see. The garden is divided into four zones: open woodland, damp and shady woodland, prairie border and arid border. Water acts as a unifying element to link and emphasise the architectural features. The centrepiece is a beautiful glass cube water feature.

Togenkyo – A Paradise on Earth

This garden has been inspired by the fable of Togenkyo, a place of beautiful scenery that can help people to forget their troubles and strife, but that once visited cannot be revisited.
This beautiful garden has been designed to capture the concept of Togenkyo, bringing the idea to a global audience at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The planting scheme features plenty of greenery, chosen to help fix an image of the garden in visitors’ minds, so that they can take the memory of the scenery away with them to recall and be comforted by when they are feeling troubled.

London Square

This elegant space represents the corner of a London garden square. Drawing inspiration from the residential squares of the 19th century and continuing the tradition of great London squares, the design includes four multi-stem Betula utilisvar. jacquemontii to create privacy and height. The marble sculpture by Frederic Chevarin reflects the colour of the trees.
Cream porcelain tiles form the surface of a raised area within the garden. An intricate steel detail runs between some of the tile joints and the steps up to this area have a triglyph detail.  A unique and dynamic bench provides somewhere to sit and is also a piece of art itself.
The garden is surrounded by a mass of green and white planting, highlighted by pale apricot irises. White roses sit against topiarised mounds of Ilex crenata. The soft, abundant planting adds to the elegant and luxurious atmosphere.

No Man’s Land: ABF The Soldiers’ Charity Garden to mark the centenary of World War One

World War One, in particular the conflict on the Western Front, was a static war, waged within a landscape of minefields and across a narrow No Man’s Land between frontline trenches. As a result, battles were fought many times over the same ground, leaving long-lasting scars on those landscapes.
This design recalls the conflict and reflects how the landscape of the Western Front, though changed forever, has been regenerated. The garden acts as a metaphor for the effects of war on the human body and spirit and our capacity to recover and heal.
The garden has been designed to support ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Reachout

The concept behind this garden evolved following a discussion with young people living within a Lancashire town.
A striking metal sculpture of a crouched figure leans against a slate wall. A hand dips into a nine metre long water-channel, leading the figure through a series of stone columns that become smaller and smoother, gradually blending with the planting, to show a young person's journey into society and adulthood. There is a mass planting of thyme interspersed with rosemary domes around the columns.
This garden is sponsored by CSH Transport, Together Housing Group, Euro Garages, Myerscough College, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and The Cardboard Box Company.

The Dial A Flight Potter’s Garden

A potter’s garden, abandoned for the war in 1914, is brought back to life for 2014. This garden remembers both lost agrarian ways and skills and the lives of those who served in World War One, but also celebrates the power of gardens to evolve and renew.
Inspired by the WWI centenary and the fabulous restoration of The Farnham Pottery at Wrecclesham, the garden features an abandoned bottle-style kiln and workshop set within loose, cottage-style planting. Sculpture, water feature, props and artefacts reference both the pre-war rural potter’s life and the soldier’s war, complemented by a habitat wall, native hedging and wild areas.

The Homebase Garden – Time to Reflect, in association with Alzheimer’s Society

Time to Reflect is a place where families can celebrate the innocence of nature and create lasting happy memories. Designer Adam has taken inspiration from his father’s passion for stone and water and love of the countryside, as well as childhood memories of camping trips and the simple pleasure of being outdoors.
Natural and crafted stonework reflect a love of geology. Copper is showcased in the rills that snake through the garden, feeding water into two wildlife pools. The different levels create a sense of movement, with boulders creating a second pathway though the garden for children or adventurous adults! The heather-clad arbour provides somewhere to shelter, cook together as a family and enjoy views of the garden.

RBC Waterscape Garden

Sustainable, symbolic and sophisticated, this garden reflects global water issues while demonstrating practical solutions to common problems for home gardeners and commercial landscapes.
The design shows how water management features that occur in the natural world can be replicated in bold and innovative ways. Mimicking the watershed, water is directed through the garden at different gradients and speeds. The design is layered with naturally-occurring geometric patterns, drawing inspiration from the parched effects caused by extreme global weather. The resulting angles expose and conceal sections of the garden, encouraging further exploration.

The M&G Garden

The paradise garden – a space that uses water, shade and planting for sanctuary and contemplation – was invented by the Persians more than 2,000 years ago. The M&G Garden is a contemporary take on this concept.
Water flows from a tall, octagonal fountain made from Bath limestone and flint in a sunken terrace. Roots of the Tree of Life are engraved into stone wall panels, a simple metaphor alluding to the fact that our English gardening roots lie in ancient history.
Arithmetic and ancient science inform other aspects of the design. Four trees around the fountain represent the elements of earth, water, air and fire. Plants for The M&G Garden have been chosen for their sensory qualities. These, together with stone elements and running water, imbue this 21st century refuge with a sense of timelessness - an essence of paradise.
